Justin Murphy Celebrates a Birthday!!

March 25th, 2013:  Pyramid Roofing Team Pyramid Roofing Member Justin Murphy

Born in PA and growing up in a military family, Justin has lived most of his life on the east coast and ended up in Virginia Beach where he lives today.  Justin started his roofing career early and has been in the business for over 11 years ever since a family friend offered him a job at their roofing company.  His other experience comes from doing drywall, painting, metal roofs and other roof coatings to name a few.  Justin enjoys watching his daughter Rylee (age 4) grow and loves to send time together on family vacations as well.

Justin joined the Pyramid team as a repair technician almost 4 years ago. Since then, the kitchen area at the Newport News office has been named “Murphy’s Coffee Shop” after him because even though he has the longest commute, he arrives before anyone else to have the coffee ready for everyone.

Justin says “I enjoy meeting new people on the job” and “There is always something new happening every day”.  His quality workmanship and polite demeanor shows through all the positive feedback that we get from satisfied customers.

Virginia Roofer Offers Tips for Checking Your Roof Before A Storm

March 18, 2013:  During the net big storm, it is likely that at least one family within walking distance of your home will experience a major leak causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.  Most of the time, it could have been prevented with a quick roof check that can be done by anyone, if you know what to look for.

Just checking a few items and removing debris from the roof can help prevent leaks that can develop without you knowing about it until it is too late.  Not only do roof leaks cause damage to your roof, roof leaks can also cause costly damage to the interior of your home. Damaged wood floors, soggy wallpaper, wet furniture, mold & mildew are just a few examples of interior damage that we have seen our customers deal with after a leak.

Remember to always follow safety guidelines before getting on your roof.  By removing debris from behind skylights, gutters, in the valleys and at lower pitched areas of the roof, you can prevent the water from backing up to cause a leak. Also, checking for signs of aging like granule loss, curling or cracked shingles and missing shingles will also aid in preventing leaks. The pipe collars are a common area for leaks, so check for signs of deterioration to determine if replacement is needed.

Feb. 18, 2013:  Pyramid Roofing President Dan Worstell is constantly challenging his employees. Recently, he encouraged them to get involved in the community by joining a service club or through volunteer work and one employee stepped up to the challenge by joining the largest service organization in the world, The Lions Club.

This past week, one local club, The York Lions club, was glad to welcome James Jernigan into the fold.  James joined his parents in the York Lions club with the District Governor, Mr.  Stanley Furman there to induct him as the club’s newest member. James says

I am proud to be a part of an organization with the long history of service that the Lions has created. I also realize the responsibility I have to continue that long tradition of service“.

Today is Ricky Higgins Birthday!!

Roofing specialist: Ricky "Bouche'" Higgins.jpgFeb. 12, 2013:  Ricky began swinging the hammer at the young age of sixteen years old.  After seven years of perfecting the trade, Ricky had his sights set on a full time position with Pyramid Roofing.  The phone call he had been hoping for came through ~ In March of 2008 Ricky joined Team Pyramid as a repair technician and field supervisor.  Quick to “Climb the Ladder” so to speak, Ricky advanced to the position of Roofing Sales.  Ricky’s extensive roofing background and his easy going demeanor has proven to be a winning combination.

In October of 2009 Ricky was assigned to the management team that would spearhead the start-up of our new branch office in Baton Rouge, LA. Ricky and Cathy, his beautiful new bride of just one month, packed and left Hampton Roads for a one year management assignment in Bayou Country! Ricky and Cathy absolutely loved the Louisiana culture.  Ricky’s favorite part of living in Louisiana was no doubt the local cuisine ~ to the tune of 70 additional pounds during his time there!

One huge factor that homeowners should consider when hiring a contractor

Jan 30, 2013:  How often have you opened your door to a service repairman only to feel extremely uncomfortable once he’s inside your house?

In this day and age, safety is a concern for homeowners more than ever.  Pyramid Roofing shows how much safety means to you by having each and every employee drug screened and background checked.  In addition, our employees are trained on the newest products available, industry standards, and are graded on their professionalism.  While it is rare that employees of home service contractors are involved in crimes against homeowners, it can and does happen.

The Technician Seal of Safety

This mark, when displayed by a contractor, indicates the company’s dedication to protecting the safety and well-being of you and your family.

Companies bearing the Technician Seal of Safety™ are a member of a professional contractor organization that advocates the use of pre-employment background checks and drug testing as allowed by law.  Now, many contractors in the home services business do not bother to practice such stringent policies.  But that’s what distinguishes these elite contractors from the rest.  When you see the Technician Seal of Safety™ you know you’re dealing with a professional who cares about your personal safety, the safety of your family, and the well-being and security of your home.

Now it’s the Law!: Based on an unfortunate incident in Florida,  legislators from the State of Georgia have sponsored a bill that would require employers to conduct criminal background checks on workers before they would be allowed to enter the home.  The sponsors wrote the bill with women in mind, since women are more likely than men to be home alone for service calls.  Pyramid Roofing has a higher standard when it comes to the safety of our customers which is why we chose to distinguish ourselves with the Technician seal of safety.

One Roofing Tip That Could Save You Thousands!

Pipe Collars & Vent Stacks: The Most Common Cause Of Roof Leaks

Roofs have many openings for things like vents, drains, and plumbing pipes (affectionately called “stink pipes” for the whiffs from the septic system!).  Vent Stacks are used to remove exhaust from your home and attic.  Typically there will be vents for gas water heaters, perhaps bathroom fans or even kitchen stove exhaust fans.  These vents are usually metal and are susceptible to rust.  Also, high winds can loosen the fasteners on the vent where they are attached to the roof.

There is also a “rain collar” on these metal vents.  You will want to always check these vents during your annual roof audit.

The rain collars should be caulked and re-sealed as needed, fasteners should be checked to insure a driving wind will not blow rainwater under the flashing.  If you see signs of rust, perhaps it may be time to change out the vent.

You’ve probably heard the term “Roof Boots”.  They are the coverings that go over your plumbing pipes that stick out of your roof.  You should check these openings for rust and broken sealant, too.  Cracked caulking is one of the most common ways water can get under your roof and cause leaks.

I’ve seen wood rot, termites, wet insulation, mold and mildew in attics as a result of this “Trickle” of water around these roof openings. Make sure the gap around all these openings is completely sealed.

Also, if you have lead boots, you might want to look for squirrel damage.  Yep, those critters love to chew on the boots.  If you notice chewing marks, replace the lead boot and then cover it with a wire screen.  Stops them cold!

If you are unable to inspect your roof yourself, we would be glad to have one of our roofing specialist perform the inspection for you. Pyramid Roofing provides annual roof maintenance through our “Overhead Care Club” which also includes debris removal, gutter cleaning and 10% off future repairs! Call (757) 247-9600 or (757) 258-3595 to schedule an evaluation of your roof.

Today is Scotty Ferguson’s Birthday!!

Jan. 4th, 2013:  Scotty manages Pyramid Roofing operations on the Peninsula and Southside.  He is married for nearly 19 years and has two beautiful daughters (he jokes he is “always out voted”). He enjoys coaching fast pitch softball for his daughters’ travel team, cooking on the grill with family and is a fan of most sporting activities.

It is fitting for Scotty to celebrate his birthday in early January, College Football Bowl Season! Scotty’s passion for College football led him and Dave Worstell to start Pyramid Roofing’s College football bowl pool.  Now in its 18th year, the pool has grown to over 100 participants!                 This year is especially sweet because his Texas A&M Aggies play the Oklahoma Sooners on his birthday in the 2013 Cotton Bowl.

Scotty has been with Pyramid Roofing for twenty-three (23) years and began his career with the company as a roofing specialist in the original Garland,TX location.  Scotty was then promoted to manage the first Pyramid Roofing branch office in Denver, CO in August of 1990.  After Pyramid successfully established operations in Williamsburg,VA in 1997, Scotty was chosen to open Pyramids’ newest location in Newport News,VA.  Scotty’s loyal service and hard work have made him a valuable team member and his contributions are immeasurable.  His favorite quote says it all Just finish strong!

On behalf of the entire Pyramid team, We appreciate you Scotty! ~ Enjoy your day!

Happy Birthday To The Woman In Charge!

Nov 14th: Happy Birthday to Ms. Betty Boley!

If you need to get something done and you want action fast, then look no further than just inside the front door of Pyramid Roofing’s headquarters in Williamsburg.  If you are still not a believer, just read the sign on her door that tells you just how it really is on a typical day.

Do you want to speak to the MAN in charge or to the WOMAN who knows what’s going on?

Betty shows up early with her sleeves rolled up, ready to go to work.   She eats lunch at her desk and is usually one of the last to leave in the evening.  Talk about one who is dedicated, she is a hard worker and multi-tasker – Betty gets the job done with a smile on her face every single day!

Betty was the first employee at the original Williamsburg branch some fifteen (15) years ago. With the exception of actually nailing shingles, Betty has had her hands on every phase of the business from start to finish.  She runs all aspects of the office and often directs traffic among the roofers, sales people, and clients.  Betty keeps everyone in line, it has been said by many people many times…

What would we do without Betty?!”

Have a wonderful Birthday Betty! ~ We Appreciate your dedication!
